Laser Diffraction

Particle size analysis with precision

Laser Diffraction

Laser diffraction is a widely used technique for measuring particle size distribution in pharmaceutical materials. The relationship between particle size and bioavailability is crucial in pharmaceutical sciences and vital for quality of APIs and drug products.

At Particle Analytical we offer laser diffraction services using the Malvern Mastersizer 3000. The instrument features wet and dry dispersion units and a small volume unit for handling limited sample sizes. We also utilize the Sympatec system equipped with the VIBRI dry dispersion module for specialized dry powder analysis.

How Particle Analytical can assist with Laser Diffraction

  • Particle Size Distribution (PSD) Measurement
Provides particle size analysis across a wide range of samples having particle sizes in the range between 0.01-3500 µm, helping to control formulation properties like dissolution rate, bioavailability, stability, content uniformity, and processability.
  • Dispersion Units
The Malvern Mastersizer 3000 offers wet and dry dispersion capabilities, along with a small volume unit for limited sample sizes.
  • Dry Dispersion with Sympatec VIBRI Module
Specialized dry powder analysis ensures accurate and repeatable results, particularly for cohesive materials.
  • Formulation Development
Ensures uniform particle size distribution, influencing drug absorption and therapeutic effectiveness.
  • Process Control
Monitors and controls particle size during manufacturing to ensure consistent product quality across batches.
  • Dissolution Rate Prediction
Optimizes particle size to meet target dissolution rates, as smaller particles generally dissolve more quickly.
    Inhalation Products
Ensures together with specific surface area (Link to BET and Air Permeability) that particles are in the optimal size range for lung deposition guaranteeing efficacy of inhalable drugs.
  • Quality Control Support
Ensures particle size distribution consistency across batches, meeting regulatory standards and product specifications.
