Particle Density Analysis

Particle Density in Pharmaceuticals
Particle true density refers to the mass of individual particles relative to their volume, excluding any voids or air pockets.
The true density of material is its basic property related to its chemical nature and crystalline structure. The true density of crystalline materials can be calculated using the single crystal data of the material. The true density can also be determined experimentally.
At Particle Analytical, we measure particle true density using the helium pycnometry method (Micromeritics AccuPyc 1330 pycnometer), which uses gas displacement to provide highly accurate results. The true density values can be needed in various tasks that must be solved by pharmaceutical scientists.
How Particle Analytical can assist with Particle Density
-
True Density Measurement
Accurately determines the actual density of particles, excluding voids, to understand the intrinsic properties of pharmaceutical powders. -
Formulation Optimization
Data on the true density of APIs and excipients, is needed in multiple formulation modelling task. It must be known, for instance, when transforming the volume particle size distribution to mass particle size distribution and vice versa. Blending of materials – accuracy and reproducibility of the blend can be monitored by comparing the measured densities to the expected density based upon the target formulation of primary ingredients. -
Analytical Development
True density values are critical for verifying the results of single crystal structure determination. In the development of analytical methods, true density values may also be required. The evaluation of closed porosity can be performed by comparing the true density values theoretically calculated and those determined by gas pycnometry. -
Solid-state form
Verification of polymorphic, hydrated, and amorphous forms of products, as well as purity, can be determined by comparing measured density with theoretical and historical values. -
Quality Control Support
Ensures consistent particle density across batches, maintaining the quality and performance of pharmaceutical products.
