DSC - Heat flow measurements

Differential Scanning Calorimetry

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is used to measure the thermal behavior of drug substances and excipients.

At Particle Analytical, we provide DSC services using the TA DSC 2500 and Mettler Toledo DSC823e. These instruments measure temperatures and energy heat flows associated with thermal transitions in a material during heating and cooling.

The TA DSC 2500 operates from -65°C to 725°C, and the Mettler Toledo DSC823e covers a range of -85°C to 700°C. Our DSC analysis delivers critical data on melting points, crystallinity, and thermal phase transitions

How Particle Analytical can assist with DSC Analysis

  • Melting Point Determination
Identifies the melting point of active ingredients and excipients.
  • Crystallinity Assessment
Evaluates the crystallinity of materials, impacting solubility, bioavailability, and stability.
  • Phase Transitions
Detects temperature transitions such as glass transition, polymorphic changes, and solid-state transformations, critical for material characterization.
  • Polymorphism Analysis
Assesses thermal properties of various polymorphic forms of a drug, giving an insight in optimal solid form selection for formulation development.
  • Excipients Compatibility
Analyzes interactions between active ingredients and excipients, ensuring no adverse thermal reactions in formulations.
  • Purity Testingy
Reveals impurity levels by freeze point depression or identifying unexpected thermal events that indicate the presence of foreign substances.
  • Heat Capacity Measurement
Measures specific heat capacity, providing insights into thermal stability and material thermal behavior.
  • Quality Control Support
Ensures thermal properties of materials meet required specifications for consistency and stability during production.
