Air Permeability

Air permeability is an important method for measuring the specific surface area of micronized pharmaceutical products, having particles smaller than 25 µm.
It helps understanding the surface properties of fine powders, which directly influences dissolution rates, bioavailability, and other critical formulation factors.

At Particle Analytical, we use the Blaine Air Permeameter to measure specific surface area in compliance with Ph. Eur. 2.9.14, providing data on the surface characteristics of micronized products.
Unlike the gas adsorption BET method which measures both the external and internal surface areas of powders, including small pores and crack.

Air permeability only measures the outer surface area that allows air to pass through and is available for water. As a result, it is expected to provide a better correlation with dissolution and particle size distribution.

How Particle Analytical can assist with Air Permeability

  • Specific Surface Area Measurement for Characterization
Accurately measures the outer surface area of micronized powders, critical for optimizing drug quality attributes and better predicts variations in dissolution and absorption.
  • Formulation Development
Helps in developing formulations by ensuring that micronized particles have the appropriate surface area for optimal performance, crucial, for instance, in dry inhalation product formulation.
  • Quality Control Support
Ensures consistent surface area measurements across batches, supporting product quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Micronized Product Characterization
Provides insights into the surface properties of fine powders, essential for achieving uniformity and stability in formulations.
  • Process Optimization
Assists in controlling and monitoring particle size reduction processes, ensuring that products meet the desired specifications.
